We may not know how to cure all of the worst viruses yet but we do know how to prevent them from spreading. Unfortunately some of what needs to be done might require that the world's politicians stop playing political games and taking bribes for 5 seconds to implement but the answers in a nutshell are the following:
1) Close down all wet markets
2) Stop all germ warfare research
3) Eat less meat
4) Eat more insects
5) Wash your hands
6) Don't touch your face
7) Make all bathrooms touch free
8) Anything humans touch should be made of germ resistant materials
9) Use more germicidal lamps
10) Clean and dry all human touched surfaces on a regular basis
11) Stop shaking hands
Wet markets are places where live animals are sold to the public. They are called wet markets because when nature calls the animals have no where to go but in situ and in some places the slaughtering can get messy. Viral outbreaks have originated in these kinds of markets around the world especially when exotic animals are sold and eaten.
Yes there are still nations that do germ warfare research. The corona virus originated in a region where a wet market is a stone's throw from a germ warfare research laboratory--what could possibly go wrong....???
Although some contagion has been know to spread from raw, unwashed vegetables, you generally have to eat the dirty greens to get sick. Once a virus that comes from meat animals makes the jump to humans you could have a sickness that can be spread in the same way the flu is spread. There are a number of reasons to eat less meat anyway such has health and environmental reasons. However meat does provide some nutrients that are difficult to get any other way. Nonetheless, for most people, most of the time, limiting meat intake can benefit your health.
Billions of humans already eat insects for some or all of their protein with no ill effects. Have a cricket cookie. If you don't die, have another.
Always wash your hands after you use the bathroom and before you cook or eat. Every time. No exceptions.
It is known that touching a germy surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth could spread infection so stop picking your nose already.
Tell the boss that if he makes all bathrooms touch free he may be able to avoid getting sick again.
Making sure your hands are dry when you leave the bathroom is probably a good practice. Germs generally don't like dry, hot places.
There are materials that don't sustain pathogens very well. To the extent feasible we should use more of these materials especially in places like bathrooms and hospitals.
There are UV lamps which should help prevent the spread of disease.
There was a line in a humorous book that said something like humans died out when all the telephone sanitizers went away....hmmmmm......
Yeah, sooner or later we have to stop shaking hands. Nobody needs a limp, gooey handshake. Just saying...
