If we look at simple changes in human behavior that might mitigate the next pandemic consider this: Make it the new social norm that everything humans touch is wiped before and after the human touches it.
Now one can see some difficulty in the wiping of certain buttons and handrails before and after they are touched but perhaps the direction there we might consider is: If you can't wipe it before and after you touch it, you should not touch it. Either we need to find a new way to do whatever it is or we need to use disposable gloves or find some other way to do what must be done.
Certainly with grocery carts the grocery store should provide some wet wipes to wipe before and after use.
For surfaces like hand rails where wiping before and after may not be practical, make hand sanitzer easy to obtain and apply right before and right after the hand rail.
Disposable, biodegradable gloves might become a thing as well.
In the future, humans may leave a slime trail of hand sanitzer everywhere they go....
That and a trail of disposable gloves--yeah we need to have plenty of garbage cans around too.
